Ponyboy didn't want to tell Dally that he didn't like to shoot things, or dally would think he is not tuff.
It doesn't matter what or who you are; you can be a greaser or a soc but still be a hero.
Even though Ponyboy says Dally is dangerous and mean, in this chapter, Ponyboy is starting to realize the Dally is caring and unselfish too.
