En 12: from Friday, 03 December

Today we watched the Act II, i pantomimes - thanks for your efforts.  We then got into Scene iii, as far as the point where Rosencrantz and Guildenstern fess up to Hamlet that they were indeed "sent for."  Please post a journal comment and have a restful weekend.

Any word on when you'd like to collect for the food hamper?

  1. The plot of "Hamlet" is continuing to thicken. I think that everyones reading of Shakespeare is getting better and is making our reading in class much more enjoyable. I personally want to think that Hamlet is just acting and isn't crazy but I have a feeling that I'm going to struggling with sticking to that opinion. Nearly everyone in this play is slowly becoming more and more two faced, but I still can't wrap my mind around the actions of the Queen. I look to getting to read the 2nd half of the Hamlet part next class.

  2. I found this scene to be way to long and fairly boring. I think/hope that something exciting will happen in the next scene. I agree with Aurora that everyones reading is getting a lot better and it makes it easier for me to read along and listen.

  3. So far, Im still enjoying Hamlet very much. I agree with Aurora's comment that nearly everyone in the play is becoming more two faced. First we started with Polonius and slowly we're learning about other characters too. I enjoy these types of characters, they add excitement to the play. You never know whats going to happen next. I think that something big and exciting is going to happen next..Im looking forward to see how this play moves forward.

  4. I agree that the plot of "Hamlet" is starting to thicken as more characters come into the play and different sides of them are shown. Even though the plot is thickening the play isn't too exciting right now so something good must be coming up soon.

  5. While reading "Hamlet" i'm having no troubles staying interested, I agree that each person is becoming two faced which is providing to the thickening plot. I am quite excited to read the rest of the play within the next week or two.

  6. So far the second act has been quite boring. However I believe that there will be an event that will show up soon that is going catch my interest again. Also The fact that every is lying about themselves could make some interesting events happen between the characters.

  7. I agree with the previous commenters that characters are beginning to show more than one side to their personalities, though I think two-faced is a needlessly negative term to ascribe to something that most people do naturally every day. This does add some realism to the play; the characters act in a somewhat more understandable way, or at least Claudius does, and we get the impression that Polonius is not necessarilly the sharpest tool in the shed anyway. Unlike some previous commenters, I found the second act rather exciting, specifically the second scene. The word play and verbal fencing was quite enjoyable.

  8. I agree with Rowan here. The characters in the play are starting to seem much more like real people. I also agree with Aurora that the Queen seems like an exception. To me it seems that she may be one person who, unlike the rest, does not seem to have a hidden agenda.
Hamlet, on the other hand, is making much less sense to me than before. Earlier on it seemed he was in emotional agony, which is understandable, but again like aurora I'm beginning to think he really is crazy. If you were planning on killing your uncle, would you try to make yourself seem as nuts as possible to help your cause? How does this help his cause? If anything he's attracting unneeded attention to himself.

  9. So far i am finding Hamlet hard to take in, However it is becoming easier for me to read and understand. I feel that the reason for me having troubles when we started the play was simply because i missed out on most of the discusion. Being able to watch the movie as we read seems to be aiding me to understand what exactally is going on.

  10. I agree that Hamlet’s plot is beginning to thicken. I am, as always, enjoying Shakespeare’s writing. I do not think that the play is boring. I think that there is a necessary pause in action in order to build up excitement. Also, I am still enjoying the depth of the characters in the play. I am happy to be reading Shakespeare’s “best” because it makes me feel more cultured and gives me a sense of accomplishment. I predict that Hamlet is going to end up killing his father-in-law and then he will kill himself. I think this will happen because Hamlet will end up going crazy instead of only putting on “an antic disposition.”

  11. I agree with Mike that so far the act has been rather boring, but that something more exciting will happen soon. I do agree with Mitch that Hamlet will end up killing Cladius although I am not so sure that he will kill himself as well. I am looking forward to seeing what will happen in the end.
